What does record date and ex-date mean?

The record date is a cut-off date set by the company. If you are the owner of the shares on this cut-off date, you are eligible to receive the bonus shares. The ex-date is the date on which the stock begins trading without the value of its next dividend or distribution. To be eligible for the bonus shares, you must hold the shares before both the ex-date and record date.
